We help to maintain the pirate ship in Kowhai Park and make repairs as necessary to ensure that the facility is safe and attractive for children. This involves an occasional working bee when painting needs doing. This project will foster practical leadership and organisational skills.

The Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment is designed to encourage young people in the 14-17 year age group who possess qualities of decency and persistence. It is advertised in local schools early in July each year.

This is a Rotary Youth Leadership Award designed for youth people from 18-24 to recognise potential leaders and encourage work in the community. Its objectives are to demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth, to bring together young people who show potential, to provide information and opportunities for service, to better equip and encourage them, to bring together different cultures and backgrounds to promote understanding and to provide an experience they will always remember.

We regularly organise a movie night in conjunction with Embassy 3 Cinemas to provide a social activity which raises money for community.

RELAY FOR LIFE

We regularly provide a team to enter this locally organised event which aims to create awareness of cancer sufferers and preventative measures that are available. This event happens every 2 years in February.

EMERGENCY/SHELTER BOXES

As a club we support Rotary’s provision of boxes designed to provide low-cost, fast-reaction help in cases of emergency around the world. This enables members to provide practical solutions to real problems.

TWIN STUDENT EXCHANGE

"LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS" CONCERT

This project takes place every 2 years and is a major fund-raiser for the club. Each event has its own recipient and is run by a sub-committee bringing together all the various contributors. Members are enlisted to help with the planning and organisation entailed. It is held in the Royal Wanganui Opera House.

HIPPY PROJECT

The Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters helps underprivileged children and their families. It promotes self-esteem in pre-schoolers and seeks to improve their chances of success in the school system. As a club we support them with school bags and contents, so that each of the children who graduate from the progamme can have a new bag to take to school on their first day.

HIPANGO PARK

This is a community service project to help upkeep the Park for public use. It is also a useful way to develop leadership skills and promoting fellowship within the club. Each year in February a group of members travel up the Wanganui River with other interested groups to spend a weekend camping in the Park and with a list of jobs to be accomplished. It is a chance for families and friends to be involved in working together on a worthwhile project, whilst having a lot of fun at the same time.
